Acupuncture is a treatment modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is one of the oldest practiced medicines in the world. Today a quarter of the world's population enjoys its health benefits. According to TCM, the body is composed of energy called QI that runs through channels called meridians. In a healthy state, QI flows freely through these meridians creating balance within the body. Imbalance occurs when the flow of QI becomes blocked, it is at this point that symptoms appear. Acupuncture establishes balance within the body by inserting fine needles into specific acupuncture points located along these meridians. Western medicine believes that acupuncture signals the body to invoke biological systems to release certain chemicals and hormones thereby regulating the endocrine system and calming the nervous system. "to live is to have QI in every part of your body,
to die is to be a body without QI.
For in order to be healthy,
the proper balance of QI must be obtained,
neither too much, nor too little." -Classic text, Nan-Ching, 5th century, B.C.
